According to Gates, winds of up to 107km/h were felt last night which downed trees, damaged infrastructure and left about 134,660 properties without power.
She said 122 people were evacuated, including 25 people from Labrador after there was substantial damage to residential homes.
Two of the city’s evacuation centres also lost power last night. Three currently remain open.
Gates said the “prime focus” at the moment was restoring power to the Gold Coast University Hospital and the John Flynn Hospital, which would activate the airport.
“I understand there is a fair bit of work to do at the airport, checking things outside and inside, so they are not yet ready to accept passengers but the airport will be operational once the power is restored,” she said.
Gates said there has not been any rescues required in the last 24 hours as residents sheltered at home.
“That’s the best news that we could possibly have but we do want to remind everyone that this is not over yet,” she said.
“There is still the potential for more rain than we expect.”
About 100mm to 200mm of rainfall is expected over the Gold Coast today, with a potential for gale force winds to persist.
Four people using generator hospitalised with carbon monoxide poisoning Gold Coast acting mayor Donna Gates is providing an update this afternoon and said four people have been rushed to hospital after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning.
“It seems that they were using a personal generator inside and so my message to everyone is if you have a generator, it needs to be appropriately ventilated and preferably outside,” she told reporters.
“The people are fine, by the way, so that was good news.”
