Cyclone Alfred downgraded to category one as Brisbane residents told to ‘take shelter now’

Tropical Cyclone Alfred has made landfall on Moreton Island, off Brisbane, as a category one system. It is expected to cross the mainland coast, most likely between Maroochydore and Brisbane, on Saturday morning.

Brisbane is expected to be spared the worst of the wind gusts, but the slow-moving cyclone could generate rainfall totals of up to 800 millimetres.
