A cyclist has been airlifted to hospital after he was hit by an ambulance in the NSW Southern Highlands, south of Sydney.

The cyclist was struck by the ambulance at 10am today at the intersection of Sheepwash Road and Wildes Meadow Road in Avoca, about 13km west of Robertson.

The man in his 40s suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital.

NSW Ambulance said it was an off-duty vehicle that struck the man.

The road between Nowra Road and Illawarra Highway has been closed in both directions as police and other ambulances attend the scene.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash with assistance from NSW Ambulance.
